Wedding guest dress codes are alway up for interpretation, which is why so many of us spend HOURS researching our outfits. You want to look nice but also follow the many unspoken rules; it’s tough! A few tips for when you’re unsure of what to wear:

Opt for a dressier option. It’s always better to be overdressed than under dressed, especially for the cocktail dress code. If you’re unsure, reference the venue’s website as possible suggestions for what will be appropriate.
Absolutely don’t wear white. If you feel inclined to ask “is this dress too white” it most definitely is. Just don’t do it.
Is the ceremony held in a religious house? Consider a more modest neckline and possible a shawl/sweater/jacket. This is a sign of respect for the couple’s religion and you can always leave the accessory in your car for the reception.
Try renting your look if you don’t want to buy! Some of my favorite wedding guest looks have been rented through Rent the Runway. Just read the reviews for sizing and (pro tip) always opt for the back-up size!
Ask the couple! This question isn’t bothering them (speaking as a former bride) – it’s showing you care about their big day!

I love all the pretty pastels and patterns this season! Word to the wise: if you purchase a dress in a very light pastel, before you remove the tags: check the dress in multiple lighting options. Some of the ultra light spring shades can appear white with flash or in afternoon light. You don’t want to be “that person” that is the talk of cocktail hour for appearing to be matching the bride.

You could even accessorize with opera gloves if you wanted!

One of the most popular wedding guest dress codes, this option will be more relaxed than black tie but floor length dresses will still be welcomed! This is the dress code where statement sleeves, ruffles and bows will shine: formal is all about showing personality.

Cocktail Wedding Guest Dresses

My personal favorite dress code: this one is all about having fun and making sure you’re able to dance all night long. The majority of spring weddings I’ve attended are generally cocktail attire because this is the easiest to wear in a garden party setting.

Think tea length or shorter and floral patterns will be welcomed! I also love wearing solid Lilly Pulitzer dresses for this attire. It’s a dress I know I’ll most definitely be able to wear again.

Destination Wedding Guest Dresses Spring 2024

Destination weddings are truly a dream! There’s a huge uptick in weddings overseas or in warmer climates after backyard nuptials were the standard just a few years back. Couples are looking to celebrate with friends and family in new locations where everyone can make memories to last a lifetime.

For these types of weddings, a dressier vacation dress will be appropriate! Breezy and flowy dresses will be preferred for a beach setting, especially if the event will be held outdoors.
